My Journey to Cancer Care
After losing my sister to cancer, I got clarity. I made a saddening observation that most cancer patients, along with the disease, are inflicted with fear and anxiety of being stigmatised. They journey through the ordeal alone, underinformed and, worse, in pain. My experience and observation shaped my holistic approach to cancer care, emphasising not just medical treatment but also emotional, spiritual, and practical support for patients and their families.
During a six-month internship in 2007 with Prof J.T.K Duncan, West Africa’s Pioneering and Nigeria’s first Radiation Oncologist, I understood the benefits of cancer treatment and the opportunity to transform it into something…more.
The following year, I also discovered that there were less than 30 Radiation and Clinical oncologists, and my sister was unable to see one before her passing, and there are many just like her. Two things were clear: There was a significant lack of empathic care, and Nigeria needed more Consultants, Radiation and Clinical oncologists.
In search of a solution, I dedicated my career to pursuing a six-year postgraduate residency fellowship at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
Building Pearl Oncology Specialist Hospital
In 2006, God revealed a big, hairy, and audacious goal: a world-class cancer centre in Nigeria.
After years of training with some of the world’s finest Professors of Radiation Oncology, including Prof F.A Durosinmi Etti, Prof K.K Ketiku, late Prof R.A Ajekigbe and Prof. A.C Sowunmi and Dr M.Y.M Habeebu, treating over 5,000 patients, and collaborating with some of the best minds in oncology, that vision became a reality in 2021.
Pearl Oncology now leads prevention, treatment, and survivorship, helping over 3000 patients and their families receive comfortable, affordable, and quality cancer care.
